How to Win HQ Trivia

HQ Trivia App

HQ Trivia is an app that allows you to join a live trivia game show, where you attempt to correctly answer 12 three-option multiple choice questions in order to win real money. It is developed by the team behind Vine and launched in late August, draws hundreds of thousands of contestants multiple times a day. Here are some tips, tricks, and hacks that can help you to win.

The app’s “Submit Trivia” section reveals a bit about how the questions are organized. There are a shocking 16 categories you could be asked about:

  1. Art & Design
  2. Business
  3. Educational
  4. Entertainment
  5. Food & Drink
  6. Games
  7. Geography
  8. History
  9. Science
  10. Literature
  11. Movies
  12. Music
  13. Nature
  14. Sports
  15. TV
  16. Tech

7. Get rid of the comments section

Tons of live comments scrolling across the screen during each game is hell of a distraction, and one you definitely don’t need. You can make them disappear at will by simply swiping right across them.

6. Do not Google

Google the answer will end up disappointed: Given how quickly the counter for each question runs down, it’s highly unlikely you’ll search your way to victory. It’s smarter and more fun to simply use your brain.

5. Do not let first few questions stumble you up

The first two to three questions are almost always obvious and incredibly easy. That’s the structure of the game, so don’t strike out early on just because you think the questions should be tougher — you’ll have plenty of opportunity to wrack your brain on such things later in the game.

4. Keep an eye out for “savage” questions

Pretty much every HQ game includes at least one “savage” question that eliminates a huge swath of players. Those savage questions are carefully designed to do exactly that. Oftentimes, they play on your instinct to choose one of the more seemingly obvious answers presented to you, when in fact that one is actually incorrect. That’s another reason why it’s a good strategy to keep watching even after you’re eliminated, so that you can learn to better recognize a savage question and get a bit in the heads of the team that writes them.

3. Keep Watching the game even when you lose

Pay attention to the game even when you’ve just lost. The app lets you resume watching. If you have a few minutes to kill, it’s a great way to study the structure of the game, and what traps other users fall into. Even if you don’t know the answers to all 12 questions, you have a decent enough shot at winning. And smart guessing can make all the difference.

2. Play every game you can

The only way you’re going to get better is with practice, so play as much as you can. The game is live twice a day during the week at 3pm and 9pm EST, and once per day at 9pm on the weekend. Enable your notifications and you’ll get an alert a couple minutes before each game begin.

1. Play with a group

Your odds of winning HQ alone are quite simply terrible. There’s no rule against playing HQ Trivia in a group. Three or four brains are almost always better than one. HQ’s questions are designed to appeal to different strengths.

You can follow HQ on Twitter. The app’s official account occasionally hints at or teases the answers to certain questions it’ll ask in a forthcoming game, so it’s worth keeping tabs on what they’re posting. Also, if they have a particularly hefty jackpot planned for an upcoming game, this is where you’ll find out ahead of time — giving you enough notice to assemble that crack team of trivia fiends.

You can invite friends or others to join and earn an “Extra Life”  in your account which allows you to continue playing even if you get an answer wrong. They’re applied automatically and may only be used once per game. To invite friends to play, open the app anytime there isn’t a game in progress and tap “Get More” in the Extra Lives section.

There’s also a newly discovered hidden cheat that will score you a free Extra Life. All you have to do is launch the HQ app, place two fingers on the screen, and swipe up really fast over and over. Do it properly and you’ll end up with a bonus life automatically added to your account.
